The wedding of the artist herself!
I got married this year, and you better believe I made all my own wedding decor. Scroll through the gallery, and read on to learn more about the process! Photography credit to Emily Millay Photography

The Details

When I was designing my wedding with my husband, the words we used to describe our vision were “colorful,” “whimsical,” and “playful.” We both really love the color blue, so we knew we wanted blue to be a main color in our palette. But we couldn’t decide which shade of blue.

So we decided not to decide, and instead used a wide palette with several different shades of blue along with a few complimentary colors like peach, yellow, and pink. From there, everything I designed or painted for our wedding used those colors.

Everything I made had a bit of variation on that theme, and it all came together so incredibly beautifully!

First up, the invitations. I painted a design with watercolor for these which I then uploaded to Canva to design. I went through a few iterations of the design before I landed on the one we used. I ended up individually placing each flower in this design, and I love how they turned out! We printed them through Canva on their hemp paper and were so impressed with the quality!

Next, my coach purse. My initial idea was to paint my wedding shoes. I bought my gorgeous blue, heeled sandals from the Coach outlet and wanted to add some florals. But I was nervous to paint on Coach shoes! When I found this matching bag, though, I decided to buy it as well. This was a less crucial detail than the shoes, imo. I could get married without a purse, but not without shoes! So it felt a little less daunting to paint on the purse.

I painted my Coach purse with acrylic paint mixed with fabric medium. I am absolutely obsessed with this purse, and have used it so many times since our wedding! I hope I get to paint on many more pretty leather purses for many more weddings!

From there, I painted so many more details including: a hanger for my wedding dress, a ring box for photos, our seating chart (with almost 250 guests’ names on it!), stainless steel tumblers for my bridesmaids, 30 table numbers, a table runner for the head table, placemats for underneath our florals, signage including two welcome signs using old windows from Greg’s childhood home,  and a giant Backdrop!!

This backdrop deserves its own moment, so keep scrolling for more on that!

Overall, I made wedding planning SO much more work that it probably needed to be. But we wanted the details in our wedding to be thoughtful and personal, and this was the only way I ever imagined doing things! I just don’t think I would have been happy any other way, and now I have all these incredible details in keepsakes, photos, and videos to remember this joy-filled day!!

The Backdrop

Can we just take a minute to give it up for the backdrop?! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I had this vision early on in the planning process, but I initially had no clue how to go about this project. I went through a whirlwind of emotions and almost gave up on it altogether. No one would know it was missing besides me, my future husband, and the handful of people I had mentioned the idea to.

But then I decided that I would be bummed if I didn’t give it a try. So I put the idea in my head on “paper” by designing it in Canva using stock photos of some of my favorite flowers in the color scheme of our decor.  Then, I bought 3 yards of heavy, unprimed canvas from Blick, I rolled up the rug in our living room to roll out the canvas in its place, and I went to work.

For two weeks, Greg was in what he called “couch jail” (he couldn’t use the living room at all except for the couch), as I painted this big beauty! But we both agree that it was absolutely worth it! It turned out more wonderful than I expected, and it made a really show stopping addition to our wedding day!

We put the backdrop behind our head table throughout dinner and speeches. Our venue, Guy’s Party Center, was awesome, and they covered up the legs of the backdrop stand with this gorgeous white fabric! Then, after dinner, we snuck the painting outside for a little photoshoot moment! And when we brought it back inside, it became the backdrop for our “selfie station” which our guests could enjoy for the rest of the night!
